Corundum is a mineral from which sapphires and rubies are made which means they are cousins, sort of. However, if you priced real, high quality rubies you will see they cost much more than sapphires. The blue-colored sapphire is more commonly seen, but you can also find them in yellow colors as well as purple. Some of the common factors for determining the price of a sapphire has to do with the particular cut, size of course and how clear it is. Sapphires can make for elegant and stunning rings, necklaces among other types of typical jewelry. It is possible to see very expensive sapphire jewelry, when it is authentic, even though the lower end sapphires can be found in faux sapphires.

Emeralds, along with diamonds and rubies, are considered to be among the most valuable precious stones in the world. The brilliant green of a true emerald has a distinctive beauty that’s hard to match. In many parts of the world, emerald rings and other jewelry was considered a symbol of royalty. When buying emeralds, or other precious stones, you should be familiar with the 4C system of value, which includes the carat, color, clarity and cut. While only an expert can know the true value of an emerald, you can get a general idea from the richness of the color, the size and the presence or lack of flaws.

Many people buy gemstone jewelry online today, and while this gives you the chance to access thousands of items you’d never be able to otherwise find, certain precautions should be taken. If you’re buying from a large retail or auction site, look for feedback ratings or customer reviews to make sure the seller is honest. How long does it take precious gemstones (such as an emerald or sapphire) to form into a crystal?

I recently went to spend a few days at a ruby mine in the NC mountains and am now intrigued by all gemstones. I can’t seem to grasp the concept that something so beautiful forms in plain dirt. I always believed these stones were embedded in rocks. How long does it take these gemstones to form? Any good info on this will make my day!!!

Answer
It takes about 15 million years. And you are right, they did used to be in rock. The Appalachian mountain chain is the oldest in north America. Once they were the size of the Rockies. Now they have worn down and all the minerals that were once deep inside are on the surface. Little fact for you, one of the worlds largest emerald comes from N.C. A hiker found it just laying on to of the ground. It was about 150 carats and vauled at $300,000.
