Alright so this is probably a really simple question..But i got this 14k gold ring, with a big blue topaz on it, as a gift…I wanted to know if it was real or not, but the jeweler in town wanted to charge me $150 just to look at it so i kinda told him to well…go away =]
So how can i tell if it is real or not, without going to a jeweler?

Topaz is considerably harder than glass and you should be able to scratch glass with it. It’s a very risky test though, if I tried it at all I’d be very very gentle, too much pressure could still damage the topaz. Real topaz is somewhat brittle and you should be careful to avoid ever giving it a sharp blow.
There might be local mineral clubs who could help. I’d also try asking at an antique store or a consignment store, a knowledgeable person there might be more happy to share their expertise in gem identification with you. Heck, there are rock and mineral stores, if one of those is nearby they might have an idea. Or, um, a pawn shop…but they might lie.
If it’s real 14k gold, I find it hard to imagine it would have a fake (ie glass) gem in it. Some fake topaz’s are heated citrine, but not the blue ones.

i have a 1994 mercury topaz and for whatever reason the bolt connecting the pully (or whatever you call it that spins my serpentine belt for the car) came loose. I try to tighten it but have minimal room and cant seem to get enough leverage. once it gets tighter the belt begins to spin and i cant get it to stay still. Once the bolt seems tight i start the car and it spins loos again. How can i get this to remain still while i thighten the bolt up. am i not doing something correctly? please help and ty in advance.

if you put at jack with a block of wood under the oil pan and remove the front engine mount the engine will drop enough to access the bolt. use and impact wrench or try holding one of the accessory pulleys while tightening the crank bolt. also apply red thread locker by loctite to crankshaft bolt.
